Pitcher

12 scripture references across 2 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Pitchers were common ceramic vessels used for storing and pouring water and other liquids in biblical times. Beyond their practical household use, pitchers appear in Scripture as instruments through which God demonstrated His power and sovereignty, particularly in the account of Gideon's victory over the Midianites.

Key Scriptures

"The precious children of Zion, worth their weight in fine gold, how they are regarded as earthen pots, the work of a potter's hands!" (Lamentations 4:2, ESV)

"Then he divided the 300 men into three companies and put into the hands of all of them trumpets and empty pitchers, with torches inside the pitchers" (Judges 7:16, ESV). As Gideon's army broke their pitchers, "the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers. They held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing, and they cried out, 'A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!'" (Judges 7:20, ESV)

Application

God often uses ordinary, humble means to accomplish extraordinary purposes—trust His methods even when they seem insufficient by worldly standards.
