Overview
Throughout Scripture, pack animals such as donkeys, mules, and camels were indispensable for transportation and commerce in ancient Israel and the surrounding regions. These animals enabled the movement of goods, provisions, and people across the challenging landscapes of the Middle East, playing vital roles in both peaceful trade and military campaigns.
Key Scriptures
"And those who were near them, even as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen, provisions of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep in abundance, for there was joy in Israel." (1 Chronicles 12:40, ESV)
"The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender." (Proverbs 22:7, ESV) - illustrating economic dependence on resources transported by pack animals.
