Nahash

1 scripture reference — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Nahash was king of the Ammonites during Saul's reign. He is remembered primarily for his cruel treatment of the people of Jabesh Gilead, which prompted Saul's first military victory and established his leadership over Israel. Later, Nahash showed kindness to David during David's exile from Saul, and his son Hanun became king after him.

Key Scriptures

"Now Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, 'Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you'" (1 Samuel 11:1, ESV).

"Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; and Sheva was scribe; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests; and Ira the Jairite was David's priest. Also Amasa was commander of the army of Judah. Now Amasa was the son of a man whose name was Ithra the Israelite, who had gone in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab's mother" (2 Samuel 17:25, NASB).
