Nabal

37 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Nabal was a prosperous landowner in Carmel whose great wealth stood in stark contrast to his churlish character and foolish behavior. When David's men protected Nabal's shepherds and flocks in the wilderness, David respectfully requested provisions for his men. Nabal's insulting refusal and contempt toward David provoked David to march against him with intent to destroy him and all his household.

Key Scriptures

"Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel; and the man was very rich, and he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. His name was Nabal, and his wife's name was Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful in appearance, but the man was harsh and evil in his dealings; he was a Calebite" (1 Samuel 25:2-3, NASB).

"Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants today who are breaking away from their masters. Shall I then take my bread and my water and my meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men whose origin I do not know?" (1 Samuel 25:10-11, NASB).

Application

Guard against pride and ingratitude, remembering that contempt toward others—especially those who have shown kindness—brings God's judgment.
