Overview
Laodicea was a wealthy city in Asia Minor with a church that had become spiritually indifferent. Though outwardly prosperous and self-satisfied, the church was spiritually bankrupt—neither hot nor cold in their devotion to Christ. Jesus addressed this condition with urgent correction and invitation, warning that continued complacency would result in rejection.
Key Scriptures
"So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth" (Revelation 3:16, NIV). "You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked" (Revelation 3:17, NIV). "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me" (Revelation 3:20, NIV).
Application
Examine your own faith to ensure you maintain fervent love for Christ rather than drifting into complacent religiosity that dishonors Him.
