Iconium

8 scripture references across 2 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Iconium was a major city in the region of Lycaonia in Asia Minor. Paul and Barnabas visited there during the first missionary journey around AD 48-49, where they preached in the Jewish synagogue with great effectiveness. Despite initial success, they faced fierce opposition from unbelieving Jews and Gentiles, yet the Lord confirmed His word through signs and wonders.

Key Scriptures

"At Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together and spoke in such a way that a large number of both Jews and Greeks believed" (Acts 14:1, NASB).

"But the Jews who disbelieved stirred up the minds of the Gentiles and embittered them against the brethren" (Acts 14:2, NASB).

"Therefore they spent a long time there speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and wonders be done by their hands" (Acts 14:3, NASB).

Application

Believers should expect both spiritual fruit and opposition when boldly proclaiming Christ, yet trust the Lord's power to confirm His word regardless of resistance.
