Gallio

6 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Gallio served as proconsul of Achaia during Paul's second missionary journey around AD 51-52. When Jewish leaders brought Paul before his judgment seat, accusing him of persuading people to worship God contrary to the law, Gallio dismissed the case as a matter of Jewish internal disputes rather than a Roman legal concern. His refusal to intervene protected Paul from prosecution and demonstrated that Roman authorities would not enforce Jewish religious laws against Christians.

Key Scriptures

"When Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him before the judgment seat" (Acts 18:12, ESV).

"But when Gallio said to the Jews, 'If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, I would have reason to accept your complaint. But since it is a question about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to judge these matters.'" (Acts 18:14-15, ESV).

Application

Gallio's indifference to religious disputes reminds us that God's kingdom advances through faith and witness, not through earthly legal systems or political favor.
