Overview
Elah son of Baasha became king of Israel in the twenty-sixth year of Asa's reign in Judah. He continued in the evil ways of his father, walking in the sins of Jeroboam and leading Israel away from the Lord. His brief reign lasted only two years before his assassination by Zimri, his chariot commander, who killed him while he was drunk at his steward's house in Tirzah. This violent succession exemplified the political chaos and moral decay of the northern kingdom.
Key Scriptures
"In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha began to reign over Israel in Tirzah, and reigned two years" (1 Kings 16:8, ESV).
"In his days Zimri, his servant, who was commander of half his chariots, conspired against him. When he was at Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, who was over the household in Tirzah, Zimri rose up and struck him down and killed him" (1 Kings 16:9-10, ESV).
Application
Elah's downfall reminds us that living apart from God's Word leads to instability and judgment, whether personal or national.
