Who Was Dodavah?

Dodavah appears only once in Scripture, mentioned briefly in 2 Chronicles 20:37 as the father of the prophet Eliezer. Though his name is not widely known among Bible readers, Dodavah's son played an important role during the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. The name Dodavah means "beloved of the Lord," which is fitting given that his son was called to deliver God's Word during a critical moment in Israel's history.

We know nothing of Dodavah's personal life or ministry, yet his legacy lives on through his son. This reminds us that faithful parenting—raising children who will serve the Lord and speak His truth—is one of the most significant contributions we can make to God's kingdom. Dodavah, though unnamed in most biblical narratives, was the father of a man of courage and conviction.

Eliezer's Prophetic Confrontation

Eliezer, Dodavah's son, is known for confronting King Jehoshaphat after he had made an alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel, a man who did evil in the sight of the Lord. According to 2 Chronicles 20:35-37, Jehoshaphat had partnered with Ahaziah to build merchant ships to sail to Tarshish for trade. This was a strategic mistake—an ungodly partnership with a wicked king that compromised Judah's spiritual integrity.

Eliezer son of Dodavah stood boldly before the king and declared, "Because you have joined with Ahaziah, the Lord has destroyed your works." This was not a message the king wanted to hear, yet Eliezer faithfully delivered it. The ships were wrecked and never sailed (2 Chronicles 20:37). This account demonstrates the power of faithful prophetic ministry and the importance of speaking truth, even when it challenges those in authority. Dodavah's son understood that loyalty to God must supersede loyalty to earthly rulers.

A Lesson in Godly Influence

Though we know little about Dodavah himself, his name reminds us of a profound truth: our greatest influence may come through those we raise and teach. Parents, grandparents, and spiritual mentors shape the next generation of believers who will stand for truth in their own time. Eliezer's courage to confront a king likely flowed from a foundation of faith instilled by his father, Dodavah.

As followers of Christ in Canada today, we live in a culture that often encourages compromise with worldly values. The story of Eliezer, son of Dodavah, challenges us to raise children and disciples who will boldly proclaim God's truth, even when it's unpopular or costly. Let us pray for wisdom to be faithful witnesses and mentors, knowing that our influence may shape prophetic voices for generations to come.
