Understanding the Coffer in Biblical Context
The word "coffer" refers to a chest, box, or treasury used to store and protect valuable items. In the Bible, coffers appear most notably in the account of the Philistines' dealings with the Ark of the Covenant. When the Philistines sought to return the ark to Israel after it had plagued their cities, they placed golden tumours and golden mice—offerings of restitution—into a coffer alongside the ark (1 Samuel 6:8, 11). This practical container served as a vessel for both their guilt offering and their hope for deliverance from God's judgment.
The coffer also symbolizes the idea of treasure and safekeeping throughout Scripture. Just as a coffer protects what is placed within it, our hearts function as coffers for what we truly value. Jesus taught His disciples to consider carefully what treasures they were storing up, warning against accumulating earthly wealth while neglecting spiritual riches. When we think of a coffer, we're reminded of the protective nature of wise stewardship—the careful guarding of what matters most.
Archaeological and historical understanding shows that coffers in ancient Near Eastern cultures were often ornately crafted, reflecting the importance of their contents. They were not merely utilitarian objects but represented security and permanence. For the ancient Israelite, a coffer would have been a valued possession, much like a safe deposit box in our modern world.
The Spiritual Significance of Safeguarding Treasures
Beyond the literal imagery, the coffer invites us to consider what we treasure and how we protect it spiritually. In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus exhorts us not to lay up treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and thieves break in and steal, but rather to lay up treasures in heaven. The implication is clear: we must be intentional about what we store and preserve. A coffer, no matter how secure, cannot protect earthly goods from ultimate loss. Only our relationship with God and investments in His Kingdom have eternal permanence.
The contrast between earthly and heavenly coffers challenges us to examine our priorities. When the Philistines placed their offerings in a coffer, they were making a statement about acknowledging God's power. Similarly, when we carefully guard our time, talents, and resources for God's purposes rather than selfish gain, we demonstrate where our true treasures lie. Our hearts become coffers filled with godly values rather than empty pursuits.
Living as Faithful Stewards Today
As Canadian believers, we live in a culture of material abundance that can easily distract us from spiritual priorities. The biblical image of a coffer invites us to ask: What am I storing up? What do my choices reveal about what I truly treasure? Whether it's our finances, time, talents, or influence, we are called to be faithful stewards of God's gifts, protecting and investing them according to His purposes rather than worldly standards.
When we view our lives as coffers entrusted to us by God, we shift from ownership to stewardship. This perspective brings freedom and purpose, allowing us to hold earthly blessings lightly while gripping eternal values firmly. May we be those who fill our coffers with treasures that will last forever.
