Zophai

Zophai was a Levite of the family of Kohath during the time of King David, listed among the descendants of Izhar.

Overview

Zophai (also spelled Zuph) was a Levite who served during the reign of King David. He is recorded in the genealogies of the Kohathite family, which was one of the three main divisions of the Levites. The Kohathites were entrusted with caring for the most sacred items of the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, and the golden lampstand.

Key Scriptures

"The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief...The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief and Isshiah the second." (1 Chronicles 23:18-20, ESV)

"And the sons of Izhar: Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri. And the sons of Uzziel: Mishael, and Elzaphan, and Sithri." (Exodus 6:21-22, ESV)

Application

Zophai's inclusion in the genealogical record reminds us that faithful service in God's household, however obscure it may seem, is remembered by God and has eternal significance.
