Overview
When Nehemiah discovered merchants trading goods on the Sabbath in Jerusalem, he took decisive action to stop this violation of God's law. He confronted both the traders and the nobles who permitted this traffic, reminding them that such disobedience had brought judgment on the city before. Nehemiah sealed the gates on the Sabbath to prevent commerce and warned merchants not to camp outside the walls.
Key Scriptures
"In those days I saw in Judah some treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold provisions" (Nehemiah 13:15, ESV).
"Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, 'What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?'" (Nehemiah 13:17, ESV).
