Sardis

Sardis was an ancient church that appeared alive but was spiritually dead, receiving Christ's warning to wake up and strengthen what remained. Jesus called them to remember what they had received and heard, to keep it, and to repent.

Overview

Sardis was one of the seven churches of Asia Minor addressed by John in Revelation. Though the church had a reputation for being alive, Christ declared it was actually dead in spiritual terms. The church needed to awaken from its spiritual slumber, remember its foundation, and repent before Christ's coming.

Key Scriptures

"And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: 'The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead." (Revelation 3:1, ESV)

"Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God." (Revelation 3:2, ESV)

"Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent." (Revelation 3:3, ESV)

Application

Examine your own spiritual life to ensure your faith is genuinely alive in Christ rather than merely maintaining a Christian appearance.
