Overview
Nephtoah (also spelled Nephthoah) was a spring located in the hill country of Judah near Jerusalem. It functioned as a geographical landmark that defined the border between the territories allocated to the tribes of Judah and Benjamin during the conquest and division of Canaan under Joshua.
Key Scriptures
"And the border extended from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and from there to the towns of Mount Ephron; then the border bends around to Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim)" (Joshua 15:9, ESV).
"Then the border goes around on the north side of Jericho, and then goes up through the hill country westward; and it ends at the wilderness of Beth-aven. From there the border passes along southward in the direction of Luz (the same is Bethel), then down to Ataroth-addar, near the mountain that lies on the south side of Lower Beth-horon" (Joshua 18:12, 13, ESV).
