Joanna

Joanna's return to Jesus after His resurrection demonstrates the faithfulness of women disciples and the reality of Christ's bodily resurrection. Her witness as a follower validates the gospel accounts of Jesus's post-resurrection appearances.

Overview

Joanna, the wife of Chuza (a manager of Herod's household), was among the women who followed Jesus and witnessed His crucifixion. She was present at the empty tomb and became a witness to the risen Christ, demonstrating that faithful discipleship includes both sacrifice and vindication through resurrection faith.

Key Scriptures

"In the meantime, when so many thousands of the crowd had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, 'Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.'" Luke 12:1 (ESV) describes the crowd following Jesus. "Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles" (Luke 24:10, ESV). "And they remembered his words, and returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest" (Luke 24:8-9, ESV).

Application

Let Joanna's faithful presence at the cross and her obedience to proclaim the resurrection encourage you to boldly witness to Christ's power regardless of social status or opposition.
