Overview
Jephthah rose from humble origins as the son of a harlot to become a military leader and judge over Israel. Despite being rejected by his family, he was called upon to deliver Israel from the Ammonites. Before engaging in battle, Jephthah made a vow to God promising to offer as a burnt offering whoever came out of his house first upon his return. His victory came swiftly, but so did the fulfillment of his vow—his own daughter, his only child, emerged to greet him.

"Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: 'If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord's, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering'" (Judges 11:30-31, NIV).
