Ishmaelites, the

The Ishmaelites were descendants of Ishmael, Abraham's son with Hagar, who became a nomadic people involved in trade and conflict during the Old Testament period. They appear prominently in the account of Gideon's victory over the Midianite coalition.

Overview

The Ishmaelites were a nomadic Arabian people descended from Ishmael, Abraham's firstborn son (Genesis 16). They engaged in trade, herding, and military campaigns throughout the ancient Near East. In Judges 8, they allied with the Midianites against Israel during Gideon's time, demonstrating the ongoing conflicts between Israel and surrounding nations.

Key Scriptures

"Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, 'Rise yourself, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength.' So Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on their camels' necks" (Judges 8:21, NASB).

"Now the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude" (Judges 7:12, KJV).

Application

God's deliverance through Gideon reminds believers that victory comes through faith and obedience to God's direction, not military might or numerical superiority.
