Immer

Immer was a chief priest during Jeremiah's ministry who opposed the prophet's message and persecuted him for speaking God's truth.

Overview

Immer served as a chief priest in Jerusalem during the later years of King Zedekiah's reign. When Jeremiah proclaimed God's judgment against Jerusalem, Immer heard the message and took action to silence the prophet, viewing Jeremiah's words as treasonous and demoralizing to the city's defense.

Key Scriptures

"Now Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer, who was chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things" (Jeremiah 20:1, ESV).

"And Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin Gate of the house of the Lord" (Jeremiah 20:2, ESV).

Application

Immer's opposition to Jeremiah reminds us that even religious leaders can resist God's true word when it challenges their interests, calling believers to remain faithful to Scripture regardless of institutional pressure or persecution.
