Overview
Giloh was a city in the hill country of Judah that held significance as the birthplace of Ahithophel, one of King David's most trusted advisors. When Absalom led a rebellion against David, Ahithophel joined the conspiracy and provided strategic counsel to the rebel king. However, when his advice was rejected in favor of Hushai's counsel, Ahithophel returned to his hometown of Giloh, where he set his affairs in order and hanged himself.
Key Scriptures
"Now when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to his own city. He set his house in order and hanged himself" (2 Samuel 17:23, ESV).
"Now in those days the counsel of Ahithophel was as if one consulted the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed, both by David and by Absalom" (2 Samuel 16:23, ESV).
Application
Ahithophel's tragic return to Giloh reminds us that pride in our own wisdom, when rejected, can lead to despair—whereas humility before God's purposes brings peace.
