Abel

The second son of Adam and Eve, a shepherd who was murdered by his older brother Cain out of jealousy because God accepted Abel’s offering but rejected Cain’s.

Abel presented an offering of the “firstlings of his flock” to God, which was accepted because it was offered by faith. His brother Cain, a farmer, offered fruit of the ground, which was rejected. Cain lured Abel into a field and killed him. Abel is identified in the New Testament as the first martyr and as a “righteous” man whose blood cried out for justice, contrasting with the blood of Christ which cries out for mercy.
