Who Was Arphaxad?
Arphaxad holds a special place in Scripture as a pivotal figure in the genealogy of faith. He was the son of Shem, one of Noah's three sons, born shortly after the flood (Genesis 10:22). His name appears consistently in the biblical record, mentioned in Genesis 10:22-23, Genesis 11:10-13, 1 Chronicles 1:17-18, and even in Luke's gospel (Luke 3:36). This repeated documentation underscores the importance God places on faithful lineages and the preservation of His covenant promises.
Living 438 years according to Genesis 11:12-13, Arphaxad fathered Shelah and witnessed the early post-flood world as it developed and spread across the earth. Though we know little of his personal character or daily life, his very existence demonstrates God's commitment to sustaining a people through whom His redemptive plan would unfold. Arphaxad stands as a generational link connecting the judgment of the flood to the promise of a Savior who would come through Abraham's line.
Arphaxad in God's Redemptive Plan
What makes Arphaxad remarkable is not what Scripture says about him, but rather what his existence secured for all believers. As an ancestor of Abraham, Arphaxad was part of God's intentional design to bring about the Incarnation. In Genesis 12:3, we see God's covenant promise to Abraham that through his seed all nations would be blessed. This blessing ultimately points to Jesus Christ, and Arphaxad was instrumental in maintaining that bloodline through the centuries.
The genealogies that include Arphaxad aren't merely dusty historical records; they are testimonies to God's meticulous care in orchestrating human history toward redemption. When we encounter these genealogies in Scripture, we're reading an unbroken chain of faith, hope, and divine purpose. Arphaxad's faithfulness, however quiet and unremarked, contributed to the preservation of the covenant line. He reminds us that every generation has a role to play in God's larger story.
A Lesson for Our Lives
Arphaxad teaches us something profoundly pastoral: you don't need to be famous or celebrated to be vital to God's purposes. Your faithfulness in your generation matters. Perhaps you'll never be known beyond your family or community, yet your choices, your character, and your commitment to faith ripple through time in ways you may never fully see this side of eternity. Like Arphaxad, you are a link in a chain—a steward of faith passed to you and a guardian of truth to pass along to the next generation.
As believers in Canada and around the world, we carry forward the same gospel that moved through Arphaxad's line. We too are part of this unbroken testimony to God's faithfulness. May we embrace our role with the same quiet steadfastness, knowing that faithfulness matters, generations matter, and our part in God's story matters profoundly.
Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (Genesis 12:1-3, KJV)
