Identity and Family Line
Areli appears in Scripture as one of the sons of Gad, Jacob's seventh son, making him a grandson of the patriarch Jacob and great-grandson of Isaac. His name is recorded in the genealogical records found in Genesis 46:16, where Moses lists the descendants of Jacob who journeyed into Egypt during the famine. These genealogies, while sometimes overlooked in our reading, serve an important purpose in Scripture—they remind us that God remembers His people by name and keeps careful account of His covenant family.
The tribe of Gad, from which Areli descended, would later become one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Though Areli himself is mentioned only briefly by name, his family line contributed to the spiritual and national heritage of God's chosen people. In Numbers 26:17, Areli is mentioned again in the census of Israel, this time among the Arelites—those who descended from him—showing that his name lived on through his descendants and became associated with a distinct family group within the larger tribe of Gad.
The Significance of Genealogies in God's Plan
One might wonder why the Bible includes so many names and genealogies. Yet these lists reveal something profound about God's character and His covenant promises. When God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, these genealogies prove that promise was kept. Every name—including Areli—represents a real person loved by God and part of His unfolding plan of redemption.
The genealogies connecting back to Jacob through Areli also emphasize the continuity of God's covenant. God had promised Jacob at Bethel that his descendants would be like the dust of the earth, spreading out in all directions (Genesis 28:14). The careful recording of names like Areli demonstrates that God was faithful to that promise. For Christians, this reminds us that God takes His commitments seriously and remembers every one of His people individually, not just collectively. In the New Testament, Jesus Himself is presented through a genealogy (Matthew 1:1-17), showing that the line of the covenant was preserved all the way to Christ.
A Pastoral Application for Today
Though Areli lived thousands of years ago and is mentioned only briefly in Scripture, his inclusion in God's Word speaks to us today. It reminds us that no faithful life is too small or insignificant to matter in God's eyes. Whether our names are remembered by many or few on this earth, God knows us completely. He calls us by name (Isaiah 43:1) and has written our names in the Book of Life if we belong to Christ (Revelation 20:15).
As Canadian believers, we can take comfort knowing that we are part of God's covenant family through Jesus Christ, adopted into the spiritual lineage that flows from Abraham through the ages. Just as Areli's descendants carried his family name forward, we carry the name of Christ into our communities, workplaces, and families. Our lives, though they may seem ordinary, are part of God's grand redemptive story.
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart" (Jeremiah 1:5).
