Overview

The Decapolis was a region of ten cities located primarily east of the Jordan River in what is now modern-day Syria and Jordan. Biblical Account
The Gospel of Mark provides the most detailed accounts of Jesus' miracles in the Decapolis region. After crossing the Sea of Galilee, Jesus encountered a man possessed by a legion of demons. The account states: "When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him. And he cried out in a loud voice, 'What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Jesus cast out the demons, and they entered a herd of swine, which ran down a steep bank into the sea. Following this deliverance, the formerly demon-possessed man became a witness to the Decapolis region. "Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, 'Go home to your people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.'" Later in the Decapolis, Jesus healed a deaf man with a speech impediment. The Gospel records that "they brought to Him a deaf man who had a speech impediment, and they begged Jesus to lay His hand on him." Mark 7:32 BSB Jesus performed this miracle with specific actions and words: "He took him aside away from the crowd, placed His fingers in his ears, and after spitting, touched his tongue. Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed and said to him, 'Ephphatha!' (that is, 'Be opened!'). And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he began to speak plainly."
