Amethyst

Amethyst appears in Scripture as a precious stone symbolizing royalty, spiritual beauty, and God's magnificent craftsmanship in both earthly and heavenly realms.

The Priestly Breastplate

Exodus 28:19 identifies amethyst as one of the twelve precious stones adorning the high priest's breastplate, specifically positioned in the third row alongside jacinth and agate. This sacred garment, worn when the high priest entered God's presence, represented the twelve tribes of Israel before the Lord. Each stone was engraved with the name of a tribe, creating a beautiful mosaic of God's chosen people carried close to the priest's heart.

The inclusion of amethyst in this holy vestment speaks to its value and significance in ancient times. Purple stones like amethyst were associated with royalty and nobility, making it fitting that God's people would be represented by such precious materials. As believers today, we can take comfort knowing that we too are precious in God's sight, carried on the heart of our great High Priest, Jesus Christ, who intercedes for us continually.

The Heavenly Jerusalem

Revelation 21:20 reveals that amethyst will be one of the foundation stones of the New Jerusalem's wall, specifically the twelfth foundation. This magnificent city, described as the bride of Christ, will display God's glory through these precious stones that reflect His light in brilliant colors. The amethyst foundation reminds us that what we consider beautiful and valuable on earth is merely a shadow of the incomparable beauty awaiting us in eternity.

John's vision in Revelation shows us that God delights in beauty and craftsmanship. The New Jerusalem isn't described as merely functional but as breathtakingly beautiful, adorned with every kind of precious stone. This should encourage Christian artists, craftsmen, and anyone who appreciates beauty to see their love of beautiful things as a reflection of God's own creative nature and His desire to surround His people with magnificence.

Living as God's Precious Stones

While we marvel at the physical beauty of amethyst in Scripture, we must remember that we ourselves are described as living stones being built into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:5). Just as the amethyst required formation under pressure and time to develop its stunning purple color, God shapes and refines us through life's circumstances to reflect His character and glory.

The amethyst in the priest's breastplate and the New Jerusalem's foundation reminds us that we are treasured by God and destined for His eternal kingdom. When we face difficulties, we can remember that our heavenly Father is crafting something beautiful in us that will endure forever.

And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. - Revelation 21:19-20
