Amber in Ezekiel's Divine Visions
The Hebrew word "chashmal" translated as "amber" appears exclusively in the prophet Ezekiel's extraordinary visions of God's glory. In Ezekiel 1:4, the prophet describes seeing "a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire." This amber-like substance emanates from the very center of God's fiery presence, suggesting something precious and radiant beyond human comprehension.
Ezekiel 1:27 provides further detail about this mysterious substance, describing how the prophet saw "the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it, from the appearance of His waist upward; and from the appearance of His waist downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around." Here, amber is associated with the divine form itself, representing the ineffable glory of God that human language can barely describe.
The Symbolism of Divine Radiance
The amber in Ezekiel's vision serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. Ancient amber was fossilized tree resin, prized for its golden translucence and ability to capture light beautifully. When Ezekiel uses this imagery, he's reaching for the most brilliant, luminous substance known to communicate God's overwhelming glory and purity.
In Ezekiel 8:2, during another vision, the prophet again sees this amber-like appearance: "and I looked, and there was a likeness, like the appearance of fire—from the appearance of His waist downward, fire; and from His waist upward, like the appearance of brightness, like the color of amber." This repeated imagery emphasizes that God's presence is both awesome and beautiful, terrible and wonderful—requiring special revelation for human minds to even begin to grasp.
Living in Light of God's Glory
While we may never experience Ezekiel's dramatic visions, the amber imagery reminds us that our God is clothed in magnificent splendor. Just as amber preserves and displays what it contains, God's glory preserves and transforms those who draw near to Him. This should fill us with both reverence and wonder as we approach Him in prayer and worship.
The radiant beauty of amber in these visions also points us forward to the eternal glory we'll share with Christ. Like amber catching and reflecting light, we are called to reflect God's glory in our daily lives, knowing that one day we'll behold His full radiance face to face.
I looked, and I saw the likeness of a man. From what appeared to be his waist down he was like fire, and from there up his appearance was as bright as glowing metal. (Ezekiel 8:2)
