Following man over Scripture represents one of the most subtle yet dangerous departures from biblical faith. This false teaching elevates human authority, tradition, interpretation, and opinion above the written Word of God, causing believers to trust in fallible human leadership rather than in the infallible authority of Scripture itself. When the teachings, philosophies, and directives of human leaders—whether pastors, scholars, or cultural figures—supersede what the Bible clearly states, believers are led away from the foundation of truth. The danger lies not merely in disagreement with Scripture, but in the systematic replacement of God's Word with human wisdom as the final authority in matters of faith and practice. This pattern has corrupted countless congregations and individual believers throughout history, dimming the light of biblical truth and substituting it with the shifting sands of human reasoning and preference.
Biblical Account
Scripture repeatedly warns against prioritizing human authority over God's Word. The Apostle Paul commended the Bereans for their commitment to Scripture, stating: "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." — Acts 17:11 BSB. Jesus Christ Himself rebuked religious leaders for replacing God's commandments with human tradition: "So for the sake of your tradition, you have nullified the word of God." — Matthew 15:6 BSB. Theological Significance
This false teaching strikes at the very nature of God's authority and the sufficiency of Scripture. When believers elevate human wisdom above Scripture, they implicitly deny the adequacy and authority of God's revelation. This undermines the doctrine of sola scriptura—that Scripture alone is the final authority for faith and practice.
Furthermore, following man over Scripture contradicts the work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit's primary function is to illuminate God's Word to believers, not to bypass it or to establish new authorities parallel to it.
