Aberrant Christology refers to any theological system that denies or distorts the biblical truth about the person and work of Jesus Christ. Throughout church history, various false teachings have emerged that misrepresent who Jesus is, what He accomplished, and His relationship to God the Father and the Holy Spirit. These errors range from denying His deity to rejecting His humanity, from minimizing His redemptive work to elevating Him above the Father. Understanding these false views is essential for believers because correct understanding of Christ directly affects salvation, worship, and the foundation of the Christian faith itself. The Scripture consistently affirms that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, eternally begotten of the Father, and the only Savior of mankind.
Biblical Account
Scripture establishes that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, coequal with the Father in every divine attribute. The apostle John declared the fundamental truth about Christ's identity: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." — John 1:1 BSB. False views of Jesus undermine the entire foundation of Christian faith and salvation. If Christ is not fully God, then His sacrifice cannot atone for humanity's sins, and redemption becomes impossible. If He is not truly human, then He did not genuinely represent humanity or accomplish real reconciliation between God and man. The incarnation demonstrates God's infinite love and commitment to human redemption—a truth that aberrant Christologies inevitably distort or deny. Correct Christology ensures that believers worship Jesus with the same reverence due to God Himself, recognizing that "all things have been created through him and for him." — Colossians 1:16 BSB. It also guarantees that salvation rests upon a finished, sufficient, and eternally valid work of redemption.
