Peter's walk on water stands as one of the most remarkable demonstrations of faith and divine power recorded in Scripture. This extraordinary event occurred after Jesus had fed the five thousand and withdrew to a mountain to pray. While His disciples were rowing across the Sea of Galilee, facing strong winds and turbulent waves, Jesus came to them, walking on the water during the fourth watch of the night. Peter, recognizing his Master, asked to be called out onto the water, and Jesus invited him to come. For a brief moment, Peter walked on the water toward Jesus, defying the laws of nature through faith. However, when Peter noticed the strong wind and became afraid, he began to sink. Jesus immediately reached out and caught him, asking why Peter doubted and had little faith. This event reveals the nature of belief, the power of Christ over creation, and the consequences of fear and wavering trust.
Biblical Account
Matthew's gospel provides the primary detailed account of this event. Jesus had spent time in solitude, praying on the mountain after the miraculous feeding. His disciples had gotten into their boat and were being driven by the wind, for it was against them. During the fourth watch of the night, approximately between three and six o'clock in the morning, Jesus came walking toward them on the sea.

The disciples were terrified when they saw a figure walking on the water, initially believing they were seeing a ghost or spirit. Jesus immediately spoke to calm their fear, identifying Himself and encouraging them not to be afraid. Peter, acting with boldness, responded to Jesus by asking for confirmation of His identity and requesting permission to walk on the water toward Him. Jesus granted this request with a simple command to come.

Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking on the water toward Jesus. As long as his focus remained on the Master, Peter defied natural law. However, when Peter observed the strong wind and the violent waves surrounding him, his attention shifted from Jesus to his circumstances, and fear gripped his heart. Peter immediately began to sink into the water.

Jesus quickly reached out and caught Peter, preventing him from being overcome by the water. Christ's rebuke was gentle but direct, questioning why Peter had doubted and why his faith had wavered.
