When Jesus was twelve years old, He traveled with His parents to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. This event marks the only recorded incident from His childhood years and provides a glimpse into His early awareness of His divine mission and relationship with God the Father. Biblical Account
Luke provides the only Gospel account of this significant event in Jesus' childhood. When the Feast of the Passover was completed, Jesus' parents began their return journey to Nazareth, but Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem without their knowledge. After searching for three days, Mary and Joseph found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

When His parents found Him and expressed their distress, Jesus responded by indicating that He must be in His Father's house, revealing His awareness of His unique relationship with God. He then returned with them to Nazareth and was obedient to them, demonstrating proper submission to parental authority while also showing awareness of a higher calling.
Theological Significance
This account reveals essential truths about the nature and identity of Jesus Christ. His presence in the temple and His engagement with teachers of the law demonstrate that Jesus possessed divine wisdom and understanding from childhood. His declaration that He must be about His Father's business shows His consciousness of His divine mission and unique relationship with God the Father.
The incident also illustrates the mystery of the Incarnation—that Jesus was fully God and fully man.
