Overview
Syene (also spelled Aswan) was situated in Upper Egypt at the first cataract of the Nile River, serving as Egypt's southern frontier. The prophet Ezekiel references this distant city to emphasize the comprehensive nature of God's coming judgment against Egypt, spanning from its northern to southern boundaries.
Key Scriptures
"Thus says the Lord God: 'I will also make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate; and among the cities that are laid waste, her cities shall be desolate forty years; and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout the countries.'" (Ezekiel 29:12, NASB)
"They shall know that I am the Lord, when I have set fire to Egypt and all her helpers are broken. On that day messengers shall go forth from me in ships to frighten the unsuspecting Ethiopians; and anguish shall come upon them on the day of Egypt's doom; for behold, it comes!" (Ezekiel 30:8, ESV)
