Overview
Shimea (also spelled Shimeah) was a Levite assigned to temple music during King David's reign. He is listed among the singers appointed to minister before the ark of the covenant, representing the organized worship structure David established for Israel. Little personal detail is recorded about him, but his inclusion in the genealogies indicates his significant role in Israel's religious life.
Key Scriptures
"The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. Now Eleazar died and had no sons, but only daughters; their cousins, the sons of Kish, took them as wives. The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth, three." (1 Chronicles 23:21-23, ESV). "Heman the singer, the son of Joel, son of Samuel...and his brothers Asaph and Ethan" (1 Chronicles 15:17, ESV) provides context for the singer assignments including Shimea's service.
Application
Shimea's faithful service in worship reminds us that even roles not prominently featured in Scripture are important in God's kingdom work and worthy of our diligent service today.
