Overview
Timnath was a city located in the territory of Judah, situated near the Philistine border. The city appears in two notable Old Testament accounts separated by centuries, both involving romantic entanglements that had significant consequences for God's people and His purposes.
Key Scriptures
"And Judah went down from his brothers and turned aside to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. There he saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took her and went in to her" (Genesis 38:1-2, ESV). Later, "Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, 'Remain a widow in your father's house, till Shelah my son grows up'" near Timnath (Genesis 38:11, ESV).
"Then Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. Then he came up and told his father and mother, 'I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. Now get her for me as my wife'" (Judges 14:1-2, ESV).
Application
These accounts remind us that romantic choices outside God's design lead to complications, yet God's sovereignty works through our failures to accomplish His ultimate purposes.
