Orpah

Orpah was a Moabite woman who married into Naomi's family but chose to return to her people rather than follow Naomi to Bethlehem. Her decision contrasts sharply with Ruth's commitment to Naomi and God.

Overview

Orpah was the wife of Chilion, son of Naomi and Elimelech, during the time of the judges in Israel. After her husband's death, she initially set out with Naomi and her sister-in-law Ruth to return to Bethlehem. However, when Naomi urged both women to return to their own families, Orpah chose the comfort and security of her Moabite homeland over the uncertain path with Naomi.

Key Scriptures

"And Naomi said, 'Go back, my daughters. Why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb that they may become your husbands?' (Ruth 1:11, ESV)

"And they lifted up their voices and wept again. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her." (Ruth 1:14, ESV)

"So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabite with her, who returned from the country of Moab." (Ruth 3:22, ESV)

Application

Orpah's decision reminds us that choosing earthly comfort over faith in God's purposes leads to obscurity, while Ruth's commitment to faith and God's people resulted in blessing and a place in Christ's genealogy.
