Onesimus

Onesimus was a slave who became a Christian and was reconciled to his master Philemon through Paul's apostolic intervention. His conversion demonstrates Christ's transformative power and the radical equality found in the gospel.

Overview

Onesimus was a slave belonging to Philemon, a wealthy Christian at Colossae. He had apparently fled his master but was converted to Christ through Paul's ministry, likely while Paul was imprisoned. Paul then sent Onesimus back to Philemon with a letter appealing for his acceptance as a beloved brother in Christ rather than merely as a slave.

Key Scriptures

"Tychicus will tell you all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts; and with him Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you" (Colossians 4:7-9, NASB).

"I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment" (Philemon 10, ESV).

Application

Onesimus's transformation reminds us that the gospel breaks down worldly barriers and creates genuine spiritual family bonds that transcend social status.
