Mispereth

Mispereth was a leader among the Jewish exiles who returned from Babylonian captivity under Zerubbabel. He is listed among those who came back to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple and restore the community.

Overview

Mispereth appears in the historical records of the return from exile as one of the leaders who accompanied Zerubbabel back to Jerusalem. Though little is known about him individually, his inclusion in these lists indicates he held a position of responsibility among the returning exiles and played a role in the restoration of God's people and the rebuilding of the temple.

Key Scriptures

"These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away to Babylon, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town" (Ezra 2:1, ESV). "The number of the men of the people of Israel: the sons of Parosh, 2,172. The sons of Shephatiah, 372...and with them were Mispereth" (Nehemiah 7:7-8, NASB).

Application

Mispereth reminds us that God uses faithful leaders throughout history to accomplish His purposes, even when their individual stories remain largely unrecorded in Scripture.
