Overview
Mehetabeel appears in the biblical record during the post-exilic period when the Jewish people were rebuilding Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. She was married to Shemaiah, a priest who played a role in the events surrounding Nehemiah's leadership. Her mention in Scripture relates to an incident involving opposition to Nehemiah's work.
Key Scriptures
"So I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up. And he said, 'Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you. Indeed, at night they are coming to kill you.'" (Nehemiah 6:10, ESV)
Nehemiah recognized this as a scheme to trap him and refused to enter the temple, responding, "Should such a man as I flee?" (Nehemiah 6:11, ESV)
Application
Mehetabeel's household reminds us that even godly families can be drawn into schemes against God's work; we must discern between genuine counsel and traps designed to compromise our faith and obedience.
