Overview
Mahlon was one of two sons born to Elimelech and Naomi during their sojourn in Moab due to famine in Bethlehem. He married Ruth, a Moabite woman, but died in Moab without producing offspring. His death set in motion the events of redemption that culminated in Boaz marrying Ruth and restoring the family line and inheritance.
Key Scriptures
"Then Boaz said, 'On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also buy it from Ruth the Moabite, the wife of the dead, in order to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance.'" (Ruth 4:5, ESV)
"So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, 'Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel!'" (Ruth 4:13, ESV)
Application
Mahlon's story demonstrates how God's providence works through loss and redemption to accomplish His purposes across generations, ultimately leading to the lineage of David and Christ.
