Mahaneh-Dan

Mahaneh-Dan (Camp of Dan) was a location between Zorah and Eshtaol where the tribe of Dan camped during their migration and military expeditions in Canaan. This site appears in the accounts of Samson and the Danite conquest narrative.

Overview

Mahaneh-Dan served as a military encampment for the tribe of Dan in the hill country of Judah. The name means "Camp of Dan" and marked significant moments in Israel's early settlement period, including Samson's early victories and the Danite tribe's northward migration to establish their territorial inheritance.

Key Scriptures

"And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol" (Judges 13:25, ESV).

"So the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, how they dwelt in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting; and there was no magistrate in the land who put them to shame in anything, nor was any ruler, for they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone else" (Judges 18:7, NASB)—describing the Danites' scouting mission from this camp.

Application

Remember that God works through ordinary geographical locations and circumstances to accomplish His purposes for His people, even when His work seems hidden in local, tribal histories.
