Magi

The Magi were wise men from the East who traveled to Jerusalem seeking the newborn King of the Jews, guided by His star. Their visit to Jesus demonstrates that God's salvation extends beyond Israel and invites sincere seekers from all nations to worship Christ.

Overview

The Magi (also called wise men) arrived in Jerusalem during Herod's reign, having observed an unusual star in the east that signaled the birth of the King of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-2). Their arrival troubled Herod and all Jerusalem, prompting the chief priests and scribes to confirm that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:3-6). Herod deceptively asked the Magi to locate Jesus so he could worship Him, but after finding the child and presenting costly gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod (Matthew 2:7-12).

Key Scriptures

"Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, 'Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?'" (Matthew 2:1-2, ESV)

"On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh" (Matthew 2:11, NIV)

Application

Like the Magi, believers should diligently seek Jesus and respond to Him with genuine worship and surrender of their most valuable treasures.
