Landmarks

Landmarks refer to boundary markers that God commanded His people to respect and protect as symbols of property rights and justice. Moving or removing a neighbor's landmark was strictly forbidden as a violation of God's law and an act of theft.

Overview

In ancient Israel, landmarks (stones or markers) established property boundaries and were essential to maintaining just dealings between neighbors. God explicitly prohibited moving landmarks, treating this offense as a serious violation of covenant law and a form of stealing from the vulnerable.

Key Scriptures

"You shall not move your neighbor's landmark, which the men of old have set, in the inheritance that you will hold in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess." (Deuteronomy 19:14, ESV)

"Cursed be anyone who moves his neighbor's landmark. And all the people shall say, Amen." (Deuteronomy 27:17, ESV)

"Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless." (Proverbs 23:10, KJV)

Application

Christians today should honor this principle by respecting others' property rights, dealing honestly in contracts and agreements, and protecting the vulnerable from exploitation and injustice.
