Overview
Kohath was the second son of Levi and Asenath (Genesis 46:11). He became the ancestor of the Kohathites, a significant Levitical clan. The Kohathites held the privileged responsibility of transporting and maintaining the most sacred items of the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, and the golden lampstand.
Key Scriptures
"These are the families of the Levites: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korathites. And Kohath was the father of Amram." (Numbers 26:58, ESV)
"The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram: Aaron, Moses, and Miriam their sister." (Numbers 26:59, ESV)
Application
Kohath's lineage reminds us that God calls ordinary families to sacred service, demonstrating that our heritage and role in God's plan matter profoundly.
