Location and Assignment
Juttah appears in Scripture as one of the cities set apart for the Levites during Israel's settlement of the Promised Land. In Joshua 21:16, we find Juttah listed among the cities given to the priests, the sons of Aaron, within the territory of Judah. The name itself appears in the Hebrew Bible and is often transliterated as "Juttah" or "Yuttah." Luke 1:39-40 tells us that Mary, after receiving the angel Gabriel's announcement, "went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; and she entered the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth." Many biblical scholars and commentators believe this "city of Judah" refers to Juttah, where Zacharias and Elizabeth, both of priestly descent, made their home. This connection links Juttah directly to the forerunner of Christ and reminds us that God's purposes span generations and locations.
The fact that John the Baptist's family was rooted in a Levitical city strengthens the theological importance of his ministry.
