Overview
Jehoahaz became king of Judah at age twenty-three after his father Josiah's death, but reigned for only three months before being removed by Pharaoh Neco of Egypt. His brief reign was marked by spiritual failure and idolatry, reversing the religious reforms of his father. Despite his disobedience, Jehoahaz's eventual repentance demonstrates God's responsive mercy toward those who return to Him.
Key Scriptures
"Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and made him king in his father's place in Jerusalem. Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem" (2 Chronicles 36:1-2, ESV).
"And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done" (2 Kings 23:32, NASB).
"When he was in distress, he entreated the favor of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers" (2 Chronicles 33:12, ESV).
Application
Jehoahaz's brief reign reminds us that disobedience has swift consequences, but genuine repentance and humility always find God's merciful response.
