Overview
Jetur was a son of Ishmael and grandson of Abraham, born through Abraham's union with Hagar (Genesis 25:15). His name appears in the genealogical records of Ishmael's descendants, who became various Arabian tribes. The Jeturites, his descendants, are mentioned as a distinct people group in Scripture, representing one of the nations that emerged from Abraham's line through Ishmael.
Key Scriptures
"These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments; twelve princes according to their tribes" (Genesis 25:16, NASB). The list includes: "Nebaioth and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam and Mishma and Dumah and Massa, Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah" (Genesis 25:14-15, ESV). Jetur is also mentioned among those who made war against the Reubenites: "the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab" (1 Chronicles 5:19, NIV).
Application
Understanding Jetur reminds us that God's promises extend through multiple lines of Abraham's descendants and demonstrates how biblical genealogies preserve historical and cultural records.
