Jehu

Jehu's return refers to his dramatic return to power in Israel after being anointed king by the prophet Elisha, during which he executed God's judgment against the house of Ahab. His reign marked a significant turning point in Israel's spiritual history, though he himself failed to fully follow the Lord.

Overview

Jehu was anointed by the prophet Elisha to be king over Israel and return to execute God's judgment against Ahab's dynasty for their idolatry and wickedness. Upon learning of his anointing, Jehu immediately drove his chariot to Jezreel where he killed King Joram and Jezebel, fulfilling God's word through Elijah. Though Jehu removed Baal worship from Israel, he continued in the sins of Jeroboam and did not fully obey the Lord's commands.

Key Scriptures

"So Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram was resting there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to visit Joram" (2 Kings 9:16, ESV).

"Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel" (2 Kings 10:28, NASB).

"Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel" (2 Kings 10:30, ESV).

Application

Jehu's incomplete obedience reminds believers that partial faithfulness to God's Word is insufficient; we must pursue wholehearted devotion to Christ in all areas of life.
