Overview
After David's sin with Bathsheba and the death of their first child, God granted them another son. The prophet Nathan brought a message from the Lord declaring that despite the judgment on David's house, this child would be specially loved by God and called Jedidiah, meaning 'Beloved of the Lord' (2 Samuel 12:25). This demonstrates God's mercy and His sovereign choice to extend grace even in the midst of consequences.
Key Scriptures
'Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went in to her and lay with her. And she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the Lord loved him' (2 Samuel 12:25, ESV).
'The Lord sent Nathan the prophet to him. And he came to him and said to him, "There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor."' (2 Samuel 12:1, ESV).
Application
Jedidiah reminds us that God's love and favor cannot be earned through our works, but are freely given through His grace—a foundational truth of the Gospel.
