Izhar

Izhar was a Levite in Israel's wilderness period, father of Korah and ancestor of an important priestly line. His descendants played significant roles in temple worship and were affected by Korah's rebellion.

Overview

Izhar was a son of Kohath and grandson of Levi (Exodus 6:18). He fathered Korah, whose rebellion against Moses and Aaron became a pivotal moment of judgment in Israel's wilderness wanderings. The Izharite descendants served as Levites with specific duties in the tabernacle and temple worship throughout Israel's history.

Key Scriptures

"The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel" (Exodus 6:18, NIV). "Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—On, Dathan and Abiram...became insolent and rose up against Moses" (Numbers 16:1-2, NIV). "The Izharite clans...were responsible for the furnishings of the sanctuary" (Numbers 4:15, ESV).

Application

Remember that even families with important spiritual heritage can face division and rebellion; remain faithful to God's order and leadership regardless of family dynamics.
