Ishma

Ishma was a son of Abraham through Keturah, representing God's continued blessing beyond the covenant line. His name means 'he has heard,' reflecting God's attentiveness to Abraham's descendants.

Overview

Ishma was one of Abraham's sons born to Keturah after Sarah's death (Genesis 25:2). While not part of the primary covenant line through Isaac, Ishma's existence demonstrates God's generous provision and the expansion of Abraham's descendants according to God's promise that Abraham would be 'father of many nations' (Genesis 17:5).

Key Scriptures

'Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah' (Genesis 25:1-2, ESV).

'Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country' (Genesis 25:5-6, ESV).

Application

Ishma reminds believers that God's blessings extend beyond our understanding of His primary purposes, encouraging us to trust His sovereignty in all family relationships and circumstances.
