Overview
Irpeel appears in the biblical account as a fortified city within Benjamin's tribal inheritance. Though mentioned only once in Scripture, it represents one of many cities that comprised the promised land distribution under Joshua's leadership. The city's exact location remains uncertain to modern scholars, but it was positioned within Benjamin's territory east of Jerusalem.
Key Scriptures
"Taphath, Ephraim, Kepharah, and Ophni, and Geba—twelve cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the people of Benjamin according to their families." (Joshua 18:24, ESV) [Note: Irpeel is listed in the full enumeration in Joshua 18:27]
"Irpeel, Taralah, Zelah, Haeleph, Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kiriath—fourteen cities with their villages." (Joshua 18:28, NASB)
Application
Irpeel reminds us that God's promises extend to every detail of His covenant with His people, including the specific allocation of land and cities for each tribe's flourishing and security in the promised land.
