Innocency

Innocency refers to the state of guiltlessness and absence of shame that characterized humanity before the Fall. Genesis 3 describes how Adam and Eve lost their innocency through disobedience, becoming aware of sin and experiencing guilt.

Overview

Innocency is the condition of being free from guilt, shame, and knowledge of evil. Adam and Eve possessed this blessed state in the Garden of Eden until they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which God had forbidden. Their disobedience immediately resulted in the loss of innocency and the entrance of sin into the human race.

Key Scriptures

"Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves" (Genesis 3:7, NIV).

"Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden" (Genesis 3:8, NIV).

"The LORD God called to the man, 'Where are you?' He answered, 'I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid'" (Genesis 3:9-10, NIV).

Application

Recognize that sin destroys the innocency we were created to enjoy, but Christ's redemption restores us to right relationship with God.
